Disney Dining Plans: Yes or No?

Let's talk dining plans today!  Deciding to include (or not include) a dining plan as part of a Disney vacation is a choice that is, without doubt, family-specific.  One of my favorite things about this "travel planning" gig is talking through the different package options and helping families--on an individual basis--decide which fit their specific situation the best.  I'll do my best to highlight some of the considerations related to the dining decision today, but I'm always available to talk through the details in depth with clients as well!
It helps to know a few basic things up front:

  • Guests are allowed to bring food into Disney parks.  Meals, snacks, drinks--all are welcome! Glass containers and hard coolers aren't allowed (soft-sided coolers can be brought in, though), but just about anything else goes (no alcohol/illegal substances, of course).  Quick service restaurants give out free cups of ice water, and guests bringing their own food can absolutely utilize the tables & chairs found throughout the park when eating.  If you're able to pack & prepare food and don't mind carrying the necessary items with you throughout the day, this option can definitely save your family some money!
  • Paying out-of-pocket for food, snacks, etc. is also an option.  You don't need the dining plan to purchase meals or make table service reservations, and even guests using the dining plan can pay for additional items if desired.
  • Disney offers three types of dining plans.  Only guests staying at a Disney resort are eligible to purchase a dining plan.  Dining plan credits can be exchanged for meals at all four theme parks, at both water parks, at all Disney resorts, and at Disney Springs.
    • Quick Service Dining Plan:
      • 2 quick service (think fast food/counter service) credits & 2 snack credits per person, per night
        • For 2018, a quick service credit provides one entree & one drink (Coke products, teas, milkshakes, smoothies, and/or beer, wine, & cocktails where available)
      • One resort refillable mug per person (good for free Coke product & coffee refills your resort only--not inside the parks)
      • While credits are awarded based on the number of people in your travel party, they are not assigned to specific people or to specific time frames.  For example, if a family of four is staying on property for five nights and decides to purchase the quick service dining plan, the family will be given 40 quick service credits (2 credits per person, per night) & 40 snack credits (2 credits per person, per night) to use at their discretion.
      • For 2018, the quick service plan costs about $52.49 per night for adults and $21.75 per night for kids (ages 3-9).  Children ages 2 & younger are unable to purchase the dining plan but are allowed to share with other family members.
    • Disney (Standard) Dining Plan:
      • 1 table service (think sit down/character meal) credit & 1 quick service credit per person, per night & 2 snacks per person, per night
        • For 2018, the table service credit provides one entree & one dessert OR one buffet AND one drink (Coke products, teas, milkshakes, smoothies, and/or beer, wine, & cocktails where available), and the quick service credit provides one entree & one drink
        • Gratuity is not included with the dining plan, so guests will need to plan to tip their servers at the table service experiences
        • Reservations are strongly encouraged for all table service experiences.
      • One resort refillable mug per person (good for free Coke product & coffee refills your resort only--not inside the parks)
      • Example: a family of four staying on property for five nights with the Disney dining plan will be given 20 table service credits, 20 quick service credits, and 40 snack credits to use at their discretion
      • For 2018, the Disney dining plan costs about $75.49 per night for adults and $25.80 per night for kids (ages 3-9).  Children ages 2 & younger are unable to purchase the dining plan but are allowed to share with other family members. Young children will also receive their own plate & drink at all buffets at no additional cost.
    • Deluxe Dining Plan:
      • 3 dining credits per person, per night (no distinction between table service & quick service) & 2 snack credits per person, per night
        • For 2018, the table service credits provides one appetizer, one entree & one dessert OR one buffet AND one drink (Coke products, teas, milkshakes, smoothies, and/or beer, wine, & cocktails where available), and the quick service credits provides one entree & one drink
        • Gratuity is not included with the dining plan, so guests will need to plan to tip their servers at the table service experiences
        • Reservations are strongly encouraged for all table service experiences
      • One resort refillable mug per person (good for free Coke product & coffee refills your resort only--not inside the parks)
      • Example: a family of four staying on property for five nights with the deluxe dining plan will be given 60 dining credits to use at their discretion
      • For 2018, the deluxe dining plan costs about $116.24 per night for adults and $39.90 per night for children (ages 3-9).  Children ages 2 & younger are unable to purchase the dining plan but are allowed to share with other family members. Young children will also receive their own plate & drink at all buffets at no additional cost.
And as if that wasn't information overload, it also helps to consider the following when debating the dining plan:
  • Convenience & ease: Are you willing to bring food into the parks or are you planning to purchase your meals?  If you are planning to purchase food, will you have a budget?  Is keeping up with a budget something you don't mind or would you prefer to have everything paid for up front?
  • Types of meals: Are character meals high on your priority list?  How many character meals would you like to experience?  For most trips, there is a "tipping point" at which the number of character meals desired makes the dining plan worth the cost.
  • Amount of food:  How much does your family eat?  Will you want a sit-down experience each day?  Can you share quick service credits with one another to make them last longer or cover more than two meals per day?  These types of questions can help determine the type of dining plan that would work best for your family.
  • Price: Is the dining plan worth the money?  How does it compare to paying out of pocket for meals?  It's good to know that character meals average about $45/adult and $20/child (prices vary depending on time of year, restaurant and meal type), quick service meals average about $12/adult and $8/child, snacks range from $4-$8, and resort refillable mugs are $17.99 a piece. Add in the cost of specialty drinks (milkshakes, smoothies, & alcohol) and the dining plan more than pays for itself--if you're interested in eating all that food. :)
  • Freedom & flexibility:  Some families find the dining plan restrictive; they may want the freedom to order two appetizers and a dessert instead of the entree that is provided.  Other families love the flexibility of the "credits;" because credits do not have dollar amounts associated with them, many families find that they are able to select dining experiences (both quick service & table service) based on interest rather than trying to find the "best deal" or "cheapest experience."
There are so many variables that factor into the dining plan decision, and the right choice for one family isn't always the right choice for another.  As mentioned previously, please don't hesitate to contact me if you'd like to talk more about Disney dining plans (or any other aspect of a Disney vacation!).  I am here to serve. :)

Tusker House.

As far as "table service" (or sit down) restaurants go, the options can sometimes seem limited when visiting Disney's Animal Kingdom.  Unlike Magic Kingdom & Epcot, Animal Kingdom's physical location does not provide easy access to a variety of resort dining, and there are not as many choices inside the park as some other places.

While there are two phenomenal table service experiences within the gates (Yak & Yeti and Tiffins), the menus don't always appeal to our kiddos, leaving us with two Animal Kingdom "go to" restaurants: Rainforest Cafe and Tusker House.  We love them both!  Today we'll take a closer look at Tusker House.

Tusker House is the only restaurant inside Animal Kingdom that provides a character experience. Goofy, Daisy, Donald, and Mickey are decked out in their best safari gear and visit each table to give hugs, take pictures, and sign autographs.

Tusker House serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner (buffet-style), and much of the food is prepared with an African twist (although corn dog nuggets and macaroni & cheese can be found as well!). We've found that the restaurant's menu allows our family to be adventurous in our eating, knowing that there will definitely be something we'll enjoy even if we end up not liking the new food we've tried (although we typically find most of it to be delicious!).  Sweet plantains, spit-roasted bone-in ham, curry chicken, mojo pork with spicy mustard, and beef bobotie have become some of our favorites!

The restaurant is located toward the very back of the property, near the entrance to The Festival of the Lion King and Kilimanjaro Safari.  Early breakfast reservations (at least an hour before the park opens) can allow your family to enjoy the meal, meet the characters, and be among some of the first in line to ride the Safari, but you'll need to be sure to arrive at the park early enough to make it through security and complete the trek back to the restaurant in time for your reservation!  (Valid theme park admission is required to dine at Tusker House.)

We LOVE the breakfast buffet, but prefer to eat as late as possible (typically around 10:30-10:45ish), so we often time our meal with the start of The Festival of the Lion King, which allows us to finish eating and immediately head over to see one of the best live shows in all of Disney World.

The breakfast buffet costs around $30/adult ($18/child), while lunch is about $38/adult ($23/child) and dinner averages $42/adult ($25/child).  You can also pay for the meal with one (1) table service credit per person on the Disney dining plan.

If you're looking for a fun character dining experience that offers a little more variety than your standard buffet, Tusker House would be a great spot to try!  I'd love to help your family book & plan a Disney trip-- tailored specifically to your desires and budget--with as little stress as possible.  Please don't hesitate to let me know how I can help!

Garden Grill.

It's no secret that our family likes to eat.  In fact, when planning our personal trips, we quite often create our daily schedules around dining reservations, simply because we enjoy the experiences so much!

Over the years, one of our very favorite character dining experiences has become Chip & Dale's Harvest Feast at Garden Grill. Garden Grill is located inside Epcot, which means guests wishing to dine here will not only need a reservation, but also valid park admission.  Located within The Land pavilion, along with popular rides such as Soarin' and Living with the Land, Garden Grill is a great place to grab a super filling breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Guests dining at Garden Grill have the opportunity to meet Pluto, "Farmer" Mickey, and Chip & Dale and also get to experience some of the most interactive costumed characters on all of Disney property. Chip & Dale are silly and playful and encourage Mickey, Pluto, and guests to join in their fun!

Garden Grill is also unique due to the fact that the entire restaurant actually rotates.  Albeit slowly, the tables move in a circle, providing birds-eye views of the Living with the Land attraction down below. The circular shape of the restaurant provides a unique table layout as well, often making it feel as if the only family in the restaurant is yours!

At all three meal times, the food is served family-style, meaning that large, all-you-can eat platters are brought to the table.  Breakfast includes favorites such as sausage, bacon, eggs, and Mickey waffles, while lunch and dinner feature carved turkey breast, Italian sausage with peppers & onions, pot roast, macaroni & cheese, and garden fresh vegetables (grown at Epcot!)...not to mention homemade shortcake for dessert!

A meal, on average, is around $42/adult (ages 10+) and $25/child (ages 3-9), or one (1) table service credit per person on the Disney dining plan.

As always, be sure to let me know how I can help create a Disney trip designed just for your family!

Cape May Cafe.

Without a doubt, my favorite spot on all of Disney property is the area in which Disney's Beach Club Resort, Disney's Boardwalk Resort, and Epcot's International Gateway (the back gate at Epcot) converge.  No matter the time of day (it's beautiful in the morning, evening, & all the hours in between), the scenery is always breathtaking.

Last week, I highlighted the new Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast, located at Disney's Boardwalk Resort.  Today, I want to stick around in that same area and spotlight a different character breakfast, located just across the waterway at Disney's Beach Club Resort.

Cape May Cafe, like many dining experiences throughout Disney World, offers a character breakfast in the morning and an all-you-can-eat seafood buffet during the dinner hours.  While we thoroughly enjoy both, this post is focused on the breakfast only. :)

Between the hours of 7:00 am-11:00 am, Cape May Cafe is home to Minnie's Beach Bash Breakfast, where guests can dine with Donald, Goofy, & Minnie, all of whom pay homage to the Beach Club by dressing in their best swimwear.

The buffet includes breakfast favorites, such as bacon, sausage, hand-carved ham, scrambled eggs, Mickey waffles, cheese grits, biscuits, and--a personal favorite--french toast with caramel banana sauce, just to name a few. :)  Adults can expect to pay about $36 for the meal, while children (ages 3-9) cost about $21.  The experience can also be paid for using one (1) Disney Dining Plan table service credit per person.

Cape May Cafe is relaxed and laid-back (making it a great choice for younger children and/or those who have not yet experienced a character meal), not to mention a little bit cheaper than some of the other character breakfast experiences.  It's a great way to start the day before visiting Epcot (which is within walking distance) or Hollywood Studios (just a short boat ride away from the Beach Club), but is also an excellent choice for an "off park" day...Disney's Boardwalk is just a short stroll from Cape May's doors, and is such a fun area to explore!

As with all character meals, reservations fill up quickly, so grabbing one as soon as possible after the 180 day window opens is key!  As always, feel free to contact me if you'd like to chat about some of the ways I might be able to help your family plan an incredible Disney trip!

(Brand New!) Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast.

Y'all.  The brand new "Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast" at Trattoria al Forno opened today!  My family hasn't been able to eat there yet (we are counting down the days until our reservation...only 65 to go!), but I had a super sweet friend (and client!) who scored a reservation for today back when the times were originally released.  I'm so excited to share her pictures and review with you!

The "Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast" is located at Trattoria al Forno, which is part of Disney's Boardwalk Resort.  Both breakfast & dinner are served at the restaurant, but characters are only present during the morning hours.  Trattoria al Forno is located within walking distance to the "back gate" of Epcot (more officially known as the International Gateway), making this dining experience part of a fantastic plan for both an "Epcot Day" as well as an "off park" day.

I, personally, am most excited about the character interactions here.  While we've dined with Ariel before (she can also be found at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall, located in Epcot), Prince Eric, Rapunzel, and FLYNN RIDER--my favorite prince ever!--are dining with guests for the very first time!

Guests dining at the Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast pay a set price (roughly $34/adult and $20/child, or 1 table service credit per person on the Disney Dining Plan).

This price includes a "frying pan" (thanks, Rapunzel) of pastries to be shared by the table, the choice of fruit salad or a yogurt parfait (one per person), and the choice of an entree (on per person).

The pancakes look phenomenal!

In addition to meeting the characters, kiddos also have the opportunity to parade around the restaurant to "Under the Sea!"  Cloth napkins are transformed into fish and eels and can accompany children on the parade.  My children are (randomly) most excited about this small detail--ever since we sailed on a Disney cruise a few years ago, napkin animals have become somewhat of an obsession in our home.

And now, if you're anything like me, the part for which you been waiting:

Prince Eric

Princess Ariel (with her legs, of course!)

Rapunzel

and Eugene Fitzherbert (aka Flynn Rider) himself!

Reservations are now open for the Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast.  I definitely recommend grabbing one of these as soon the reservation window opens (180 days in advance).  I can't wait to meet these princes (and their princesses!).

Please don't hesitate to let me know how I can help your family find the perfect Disney dining experience and/or plan the trip of a lifetime!

1900 Park Fare: Dinner

Since I highlighted a breakfast experience last week, I figured I'd move to a dinner for this latest post! Much like 'Ohana, this week's restaurant features different dining experiences during different times of the day. 1900 Park Fare, located at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort, serves breakfast and dinner on a daily basis, and both are fantastic!  I know, I know...I say every restaurant is fantastic, and I genuinely mean it!  What I also know, however, is that every restaurant may not be fantastic for every family, and I firmly believe that one of the biggest perks of working with a Vacation Planner is having the ability to tease out which experiences would be the best fit.  It's one of my favorite parts of the job!

Anyway, back to 1900 Park Fare...

Visiting (or staying at) Disney's Grand Floridian Resort is an experience all on its own.  The Grand Floridian is sprawling, beautiful, and the epitome of all things "royal."  We always enjoy having the opportunity to walk the property, meander around the grand lobby, and simply enjoy the scenery. (And I'm thankful that while The Grand Floridian definitely meets our definition of "fancy," it's also reasonable.  Families are moving through the resort on their way to & from the parks constantly, so while "dressing up" just a bit is perfectly appropriately, so is showing up in matching t-shirts and shorts.)

And no matter where you are at Disney, kids can always be kids!

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort is located on the monorail, and Magic Kingdom is also easily accessible via a quick boat ride, so 1900 Park Fare is another great place to dine when visiting the Magic Kingdom (and/or on an "off park" day).

And while the buffet is outstanding (there is seriously something for everyone, and the dessert bar includes gummy bears!), the main draw of this dinner experience is the character interaction.

Guests basically get to meet the cast of the animated movie, "Cinderella."  Cinderella is present, of course, but so are Prince Charming, the Evil Stepmother, and the Evil Stepsisters, Anastasia & Drizella (most of the time).  When we last dined at 1900 Park Fare (back in June 2016), the stepsisters were "grounded" and unable to attend dinner, so were were able to meet one of the mice instead!

Our crew LOVED heckling the stepmother.  (They are posing with their best "evil" faces in the picture below.)  In fact, by the end of the meal, the older boys had devised a plan (with the help of Prince Charming, of course) to have Darth Vader become Cinderella's new stepfather.  It was quite entertaining--and neither Cinderella nor her stepmother were thrilled.

It's always fun to see the classic, costumed characters, but the "human" characters are so much more interactive!  The stepsisters have even been known to scope out and pursue any and every "eligible suitor" in attendance!

We dined with friends on this particular night, and the restaurant was easily able to accommodate our party (a total of 11).  Reservations for larger groups can often be harder to come by, and due to the popularity of this particular experience, I definitely recommend making reservations as soon as possible (180 days in advance)!

Since our visit last June, things have changed just a bit.  Cinderella now greets guests at the end of the meal, just outside the main dining room.  While she is no longer part of the character banter during dinner, her new set up is quite nice and allows for some fantastic photographs (she's even accompanied by a PhotoPass photographer and the pictures become part of the Memory Maker package).

Prior to her move, PhotoPass photographers took family shots on the way into the dining room. We've always appreciated the patience of (most of!) the photographers we run into on property and their willingness to always encourage multiple pictures. :)

If you've been looking for the quintessential Cinderella experience, I'd be willing to argue that you just might have a better time at 1900 Park Fare than at Cinderella's Royal Table (her castle) itself! Dinner at 1900 Park Fare costs about $55/adult and $30/child (ages 3-9), but does vary by season. It is a total of 1 table service credit (on the dining plan) per person regardless of the time of year, however.

It's an experience your family won't soon forget!

'Ohana Breakfast.

Many of the "table service" (sit-down) restaurants on Disney property offer different experiences depending on which time of day you visit.  While 'Ohana, which is located at Disney's Polynesian Resort, is one of our very favorite dinner meals EVER, we decided to branch out on our trip last June (2016) and try breakfast instead!

I am SO glad we did! :)

The "island/luau" theme of The Polynesian, which is one of Walt Disney World's original resorts, is the perfect setting for Lilo & Stitch, and all four of our kiddos couldn't wait to meet the cute lil' alien and his loving owner!  The presence of these two characters, in particular, is what drove our decision to try breakfast at 'Ohana (there are no characters at the dinner experience).  While Stitch also greets guests inside the Magic Kingdom, the lines to hug his neck are often longer than we'd like to wait, and outside of 'Ohana's breakfast hours (which are 7:30 am-11:00 am), Lilo can only be found at Typhoon Lagoon, one of Disney's two water parks (Stitch is there as well!).  Having the opportunity to enjoy a delicious breakfast, at a comfortable table, while waiting for characters to make their way to us is something we enjoy much more than standing in long, hot lines! :)

The breakfast at 'Ohana is all-you-can-eat and is served family-style, which is always a perk for us! While we're definitely fans of a good buffet, we also appreciate dining experiences where nobody has to leave the table!  It's much easier for us to keep an eye on our kiddos (and their plates!), as well as enjoy our own food, when constant trips to the buffet aren't involved.

Gigantic skillets of scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, sausage links, bacon, biscuits & Mickey waffles are delivered to the table (and keep on coming until you stop eating!), along with 'Ohana's signature breakfast drink (a combination of passion fruit, orange, and guava juices).  Sweet pastries are brought as well.

And, in addition to Lilo & Stitch, Pluto and Mickey are on hand for hugs and autographs, too!

We chose to dine at 'Ohana on our check-out day (we simply wanted one more Disney experience before making the long drive home), but in addition to being an excellent choice for a "non-park" day, it is also extremely convenient to Magic Kingdom.  In fact, it's only a monorail ride away!

As part of a Magic Kingdom day, families could either grab breakfast before entering the park (and simply ride the monorail over to Main Street, USA after filling up) or visit Magic Kingdom first (especially if the park opens at 8:00 am), take advantage of the shorter lines at the beginning of the day, and then ride the monorail over for a later breakfast reservation (10:30 or 10:45).

Breakfast at 'Ohana is an extremely popular experience, so I do recommend making reservations as soon as possible (180 days in advance) as well as expecting the restaurant to be at capacity almost all of the time.

'Ohana is delicious, welcoming, and fun...and, in my opinion, embodies the feel of island life and the theme of the movie, "Lilo & Stitch."   And just in case you haven't seen it yet, let me sum it up for you with this quote:

"Ohana means family.  Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten."

Chef Mickey's.

If you're looking for the quintessential Disney Dining experience, look no further than Chef Mickey's. This character buffet encompasses the heart of Disney World and is, in my opinion, a fantastic dining choice (especially if you're looking to build a trip full of "classic" Disney experiences!).  We don't visit Chef Mickey's on every trip, but we do make it a point to stop by every couple of years. The experience itself is simply Disney magic at its best. :)

 Pros:
  • Chef Mickey's is located inside Disney's Contemporary Resort, which is within walking distance (and is also just a short monorail ride!) away from the Magic Kingdom entrance.
  • The location of Chef Mickey's makes it a convenient dining choice for families visiting Magic Kingdom (again, guests of Chef Mickey's can move between the park & restaurant on foot or via the monorail) as well as for families without park tickets.  Because it's located within a resort, a valid park ticket is not needed to dine here!
  • Chef Mickey's is action-packed and loud, and has the ability to accommodate large groups easily, making it the perfect location for extended family and friends, kids, and celebrations. There is so much to see and do that small children won't get bored easily, and loud kiddos (and adults!) simply blend right in. :)
  • There is a PhotoPass spot at the front of the restaurant, which makes it easy to grab group pictures!  These pictures are included in the Memory Maker package, but even if you haven't purchased Memory Maker, the photographers will still take the same exact photo with your personal camera or cell phone.

  • It's a buffet.  Enough said.  :)
  • It's a great place to meet a good number of characters.  The "Fab Five" (Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Pluto, & Goofy) make their way through the restaurant, stopping at each table to give hugs, sign autographs, and take pictures.  Dining experiences are our family's absolute favorite way to interact with characters!!

  • Chef Mickey's is also a great place to celebrate birthdays!  At designated times during the meal, a "birthday" song is played over the loudspeakers.  All guests are encouraged to stand up, dance, and twirl blue cloth napkins in the air, and those with birthdays are given special yellow napkins to designate their special day.  Birthday guests also receive a cupcake (complete with candle) and a birthday card signed by the Chef Mickey's characters.  The whole experience is a lot of fun!

Cons:

As great as Chef Mickey's is, there are a few things to keep in mind when deciding if it's the right place for your family:
  • It is loud, and between visits to the buffet and the large number of characters, things can get a bit chaotic.  If you're looking for a quiet, peaceful dining experience, Chef Mickey's probably isn't for you.
  • It's popular, so reservations are sometimes hard to come by.  Remember, dining reservations can be made 180 days in advance, so it's a good idea to claim a spot as soon as possible if Chef Mickey's is on your list!
  • The food isn't awful, but it's also not known as Disney's best.  We've always enjoyed our meals at Chef Mickey's (breakfast is our favorite experience), but we're also not food connoisseurs looking for meals to satisfy our sophisticated palates.  :)  If you're a foodie hoping to dine on the best food Disney has to offer, you might want to consider something else!
That being said, Chef Mickey's is a winner in our book!  If you'd like more information on Chef Mickey's (or any of the other dining experiences at Disney), or have questions or would like to chat about the possibility of a trip for your family, don't hesitate to reach out!  I'm just an email away (heather@mmadventures.net).
